Labor Productivity and Staffing Efficiency Practice Lead

As a Novia leader, David specializes in labor productivity and staffing efficiency. He understands the critical role of labor productivity and staff engagement not only in delivering quality patient care, but also in how they can positively impact a hospital’s bottom line. As the practice leader, David directs a team of subject matter experts and works shoulder-to-shoulder with leaders of hospitals and health systems across the nation to improve their labor productivity and workforce efficiency.
During his 20-plus years in the healthcare industry, David has led a variety of successful projects. He managed analytical efforts for a labor assessment and subsequent implementation project that yielded over $25 million dollars in validated savings for an integrated health system. In addition, he revamped the nursing unit staffing measurement system for a long-term acute care health system with over 20 locations. David also led the development of the Novia Labor Productivity Academy and personally coaches and educates department leaders in all aspects of labor management. He believes knowledge and education are key to sustain change.
Over the course of his career, David has worked with nationally respected consulting organizations, leading numerous assessments and cost reduction projects all over the country. Additionally, David currently volunteers as an Examiner for the North Carolina Awards for Excellence program. In this role, he conducts detailed reviews of healthcare, academic and industrial organizations, and assists them with the implementation of the Malcolm Baldrige Framework for Performance Excellence. His testament of passion for performance measurement and process improvement led him to create an effective productivity measurement tool and operational benchmarking analysis for the ambulatory division of a large pediatric academic medical center. David also led a labor cost reduction project, where his leadership contributed to the client moving from an operating loss to a positive operating margin with sustainable labor management processes and tools.
Education and Qualifications
David earned his Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering Technology from Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina.
